Goldberg, born Szapiro (Rucha) on 15 May 1893 in Czyzew (Poland), died on 19 September 1942 in Auschwitz (Poland).

Interesting question. I would first ask how many Szapiro families there were in Czyzew and how large the Jewish community was in the 1890s. This guy is a century older than her and I'd want to know how long he was in Czyzew and whether any of his kids stayed there.

By the way, he's my 7th cousin several times removed. Looking at Rosenstein's book and having been to many of these towns in June and July, I realize that in this region each of these rabbinical families was a Katzenellenbogen cousin branch and married each other.

It does look from JRI-P records that both Gabriel and Jankiel married and had children in Czyzew and Rucha (not surprisingly) was a female given name in this family.

But there are other Szapiros listed from Czyzew that may not be related.

Here's her birth and although there's some confusion, it seems that her father (David Mendel) was the son of Jankiel Josiel, son of the rabbi:

There's a David Mendel born 1866 son of Jankiel Josiel whereas the David Mendel having children in the late 1880s and early 1890s has the father listed as Jankiel Ick.

But just glancing, I think the Szapiros in JRI-P are all descendants of the rabbi.

This Rasza (Rachel) Mirla is definitely a descendant of the rabbi -- she's named for her ancestress, the wife of the rabbi :)

And I suspect that she's the same as the woman who died in Auschwitz, I'd want to see the Yad vaShem database information if there is a witness statement.
