Good Afternoon,

Any information concerning Nils father?
All I've found is that his name was Mikkel and he may have been born in 1530.

Do you have any information about Nils?
The profile is empty, but the rather specific death info ("drowned in the river Kvina") indicates that someone's citing some source.

I *think*, based on his descendant chart, that this Nomeland is in Valle in Setesdal, and not the Nomeland in Rogaland, but I can't be 100% sure without sources.

If I'm right, he might be the one mentioned in page 451 of "Valle kommune. 1-2 : Gards- og ættesoge Hyllestad", which you can read in Norway from this link:

http://urn.nb.no/URN:NBN:no-nb_digibok_2016090648032

Not much help, it says "we don't know where Nils came from, but in a letter from 1706 it is written that his name was Nils Mikkelsson".

Hi Harald,

The only places that I've been able to get information on Nils Mikkelson were from websites such as Geni, rootsweb & family search. Very limited information sadly.
The best out of all the websites out there would definitely be rootsweb.

All I know is that his dad would have been Mikkel based on his middle name "Mikkelson". But that's just about all I could find and that his father was born around 1530. That's correct, should be Nomeland in Valle, Setesdal.

How are you connected?

It's likely that the "bygdebok" is the original source for the rootsweb & other stuff, then :-)
I added the info from the "bygdebok" into the profile.

"Nils Mikkelson Nomeland is your first cousin 7 times removed's wife's second great aunt's husband." - I just like finding the answers to questions, so I spent a little time looking at this one :-)

He is my 8th great grandfather, thats how I am named as an administrator. and found via the"bygdebok"

According to rootsweb I've linked Mikkel Nomeland all the way to my great grandpa Olav eventually down to me.

Mikkel Nomeland -1530
Nils Mikkelson Nomeland - 1570
Knut Nilsson Nomeland - 1600
Olav Knutson Nomeland - 1644
Svenke Olavson Nomeland - 1678
Tarjei Svenkeson Uppstad - 1704
Knut Tarjeison Uppstad - 1745
Torjus Knutson Uppstad - 1797
Knut Torjusson/Tarjeison Helle (Rysstad) - 1827
Olav Rysstad - 1877
Knut/Knute Olavson Rysstad/Rystead - 1909
Winson Kenneth Rystead - 1938
Murray Patrick Ezekiel Rystead - 1984

Yes, this is very interesting to study.
My great grandpa Olav died at the age of 47 due to a brain hemorage of some sort. His son Knut/Knute left Norway at a young age to live in Canada. Met my grandma (Anne) and later on served in World War 2. My grandpa's grandpa (Knut Helle) was the missing link at one point and what made it difficult was due to him moving around from Helle to Bjorgum to then Rysstad. He seemed to move a lot. There was also confusion with his middle name Tarjeison/Torjusson. I think due to error, it was documented as Tarjeison, but infact should be Torjusson.

The bygdebok book that you have, are you able to do more updates from it? I appears that the furthest back I've been able to go is Mikkel Nomeland, but with hardly any info on him. His son "NIls Mikkelson Nomeland's wife appears to have a father with almost the same name ... Mikkel Torjusson Nomeland.

I've been googling a lot on the history of the towns like Rysstad, Uppstad and Nomeland. There's not much on the internet. Unless I'm looking in the wrong places. I'd like to know what the town names mean, etc.

Sorry for the long long message. Thanks for your time :)

I will look into it when my vacation is over, I work as a captain on a shuttle tanker in the North Sea and have all my Valle/Hylestad and Bygland books onboard the vessel.
My mothers family was from Bygland and my great grandmother was from Rysstad (Signe Jonsdatter Rysstad), so I have the last few years with the help of Ancestry.com. been very interrested in the Setesdal immigrants in Minnesota/ North Dakota.
My family moved to Oklee, Minnesota and I have found lost family there.

Note - Nomeland was a farm, not a town. You can reasonably assume that anyone from Valle who is mentioned with the name Nomeland lived at the farm at one point.
It's not strictly a name, it makes more sense to think of it as an address. Families didn't begin to carry the name of the farm away from the farm until the late 1800s (with some variations) - it was only in ~1923 that there was a law saying that you had to use the same last name as your father.

Thanks Gunnar & Harald for that interesting info. Greatly appreciated.

Nomeland is not a farm either, it's an area with several farms, there is actually Nomeland both in Valle and Hylestad, Hylestad county was merged with Valle county some years ago.

According to http://urn.nb.no/URN:NBN:no-nb_digibok_2016090648032 (Gards og Ættesoge Hylestad), page 436 onwards, Nomeland was listed as a single farm in the farm census of 1601, but there's evidence that there were two separate farms already in 1600. From 1839 there were three, and from 1841, there were 4. After 1900 there have also been multiple subdivisions. I don't think there's a separate Nomeland in Valle, but I know there's one in Rogaland (quite far away).

I know it started as one farm, but it has been divided several times between sons throughout the years.

Anyway, the sources for " drowning in Kvina" is probably the author of Hylestad Gard og ættesoge or Christer Byklum. I don't have this book here now, but I will take a trip next Friday to Setesdal Museum at Rysstad.to talk to one guy there. They have the books for sale there.
I don't think it is possible to go further back in history.

Harald I've tried to access that link you sent me but I'm having trouble accessing it.

Thanks again Gunnar for the information

nb.no usually only Works for Norwegian IP addresses.

8/25/2017 at 5:04 PM

Ah man :(

8/26/2017 at 1:36 AM

nb.no actually varies per book. Most books are published under an agreement with the Norwegian copyright society that says "can only be shown to users in Norway". Some books (especially very old ones) are free to all, and some books (which ones seem a bit random) cannot be shown at all (even if they have previously been available).

When the book isn't available, metadata is shown, so that you can try to find the book elsewhere. Sad that it isn't easier to access them, but I'm thankful that it works at all, and hoping it will improve in the future.

Use a VPN service like f.ex. HideMyAss and Nb.no works like a treat

Another treasure trove with millions of searchable books/documents is https://www.hathitrust.org/. Maximum access over US IP´s.

Harald, I can assure you there is Nomeland both in Valle and Hylestad

Any new info found?

9/10/2017 at 1:33 AM

No new info, and not likely that any will be found; we're lucky to have the 1706 letter that this entry is based on.

9/12/2017 at 3:00 PM

thanks for confirming Harald

9/23/2017 at 11:42 PM

Do any of you know if the farm books contain photos or portraits of family members?
I'm interested in seeing if there are any for Knut Tarjeison Helle ... Thanks

9/24/2017 at 12:08 AM

I have the books here, I will check and send to you
