Hi all,
I have been researching my family tree for a while and have discovered that the Harvey's branch immediate branch and my father's father's) were part of the 1820 Settlers. I am now researching my father's mother's parentage which is either French, Belgium or Mauritian. Is anyone able to assist if there are any places that would help me along? I am looking at the following names Leopold John Joseph De Gaye although John is usually Jean and Joseph can also be Giuseppe so names may have been translated into the English version. William Pulvenis and Cecile Andre. Also, Leopold appears to be the name of a Belgium king and although it states "French" on his death certificate. I have also noted they didn't always write all their names on certain documents which hinder things and also because the writing is sometimes hard to decipher the name De Gaye has been written as Degoye or Degeye. Thank you
Hi Lizel,
a quick search using google and the terms "pulvenis family" provides some interesting results (but ignore the "spammy" websites which "offer information" for a price)
https://lastnames.myheritage.com/last-name/pulvenis
shows that surname is concentrated in RSA and Oz
as does this site
http://forebears.io/surnames/pulvenis
this site gives a basic tree, but no point of origin

see

among other results was the following
EDWARD PULVENIS married KATICA ELVIRA MEKISICH 1962
not able to determine if Edward Peter is a relative, but his wife Kate Mekišić probably came from the Dubrovnik area in what is today Croatia.

The surname PULVENIS appears to have originated in France, possible in Valle de Campoloro, but today very few people with the surname live in France

Thank you Ivo. I have found louis Willie / William Pulvenis married Cecile Andre. She was 15. Also my gran married a De Gaye - also French or Belgium. Absolutely fascinating. My gg grandfather's son married a De Gaye and her surname wa Pulvenis. Originally the teeeny tiny amount of info I have said the Pulvenis could possibly have been Mauritiun as according to probate docs I found, they worked in Sugar Cane areas...
