Mary Ellen Quinn emigrated to Philadelphia in October, 1928.
Unmarried, she gave birth to a daughter in October, 1929.
The daughter was adopted by Patrick and Catherine (Meer) Sherlock, and named Kathleen.
Mary Ellen was killed in an automobile accident in Nantucket in 1935. I don't recall the date, but it was a Friday evening, and the driver was a man called Pittman.
The informant on Miss Quinn's death certificate was a Michael (or a William?) Bogan, with a Brooklyn, NY address.

Also... the daughter on Mary Ellen Quinn, who was adopted, was my mother.

Hi Tim, my name is Peggy Cox and I'm so excited I don't know where to start. My great grandmother was Mary McAndrew b.4-30-1874. From what I have put together, Agnes and Mary were sisters. So I think and hope we are related. Mary McAndrew's parents were Cormack McAndrew and Mary Meehan. They had 3 other kids,William,Edward J. and Patrick b.1-26-1878 in Inver.Mary was married to John Bogan b.4-3-1870,they had 12 kids, one being my grandmother Margaret (Maggie).

Hi, Peg.
I think Cormack and Mary had a daughter Margaret (b. 1871 - d. Brooklyn, 1935) and a son James (b. 1876) as well. but I will have to write later as I am going to work now.

Hi Tim, so to continue the family saga, my gg grandmother Mary McAndrew married John Bogan around 1894. They had their 12 kids in Donegal. Around 1913-14, the entire family moved to Coatbridge, Scotland. Mary, John and 3 of their daughters (one being my grandmother Maggie) came to USA also in 1928 on the California. They settled in New Jersey Mary and John are both buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in N. Arlington, NJ.
Mary lived late in life with her daughter Maggie and family in Union, NJ. Both my mother and aunt have vivid memories oh her. So since Mary Ellen Quinn came here the same year as my family (on different ships), I can't help but wonder if they realized they were only a few miles apart.

If all this does check out, we are like 3rd or 4th cousins. And it's a BIG family!!!

Well, As it was a Bogan (I think it was Michael) who witnessed Mary Ellen Quinn's death certificate, I think they must have known of her whereabouts. I have always wondered if they were aware that M.E. had a baby.

Since our closest common ancestors would be Cormack Quinn and Mary Meehan, and they were both of our great-great Grandparents, we would be third cousins. Somewhere, I have the actual documents (letter from Philadelphia City Court naming Mary Ellen Quinn as my mother's birth mother) that brought me to this point, but sadly I have no idea where they are. My mother died in 2006, and the courts will not issue any information aout her birth to anyone else, since she was adopted. Her official birth certificate names her adoptive parents. I've never done the DNA thing, but I have been thinking about it.

My parents were from Philadelphia, but mover to N.J. in the 1950's. I live outside in Nwe Jersey, outside Philadelphia.

Also... although she was an only child, my mother had 8 children that survived birth, all born in the 1950's and 1960's, and all still living. She (my mother) has 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren so far. So, yes, the family has just gotten bigger.

All that any of my family knows about is what I have told them about Mary Ellen and her death.

There was a piece in the Nantucket "Inquirer and Mirror," dated September 1, 1934, describing the automobile accident that killed Augustus Pittman and Mary Ellen Quinn. It occured at about midnight on Thursday, September 30th. Pittman was driving.
Mary Ellen was in the employ of the family of Richard Vaux, of Montgomery Co., PA. They had a summer home in 'Sconset. Augustus and Mary Ellen had been "in town" for the evening. Both died shortly after the accident.
Mary Ellen died at about 7:00 a.m.

The death certificate names Agnes McAndrew as the mother of Mary Ellen.
The informant was, in fact, Michael Bogan, of 908 Albany Ave., Brooklyn. The certificate number is A881065 and was isued at Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

The ships list for Mary Ellen's immigrationwas for the S.S. Caledonia sailing out of Londonderry. Besides her mother, it lists a cousin - Mrs. Mary Rose, 747 Franklyn Ave., Brooklyn.

One of Mary McAndrews sons was a Michael Joseph Bogan b.1903,lived at one point in Brooklyn then moved to Westchester,Ny. I found a photo of the headstone on Find A Grave. Augutus Pitman, wife Sarah, Francis and Mary Quinn are all listed but no dates. Buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Nantucket.
I am in Morris Co NJ and one of 9 kids. My grandmother was one of 12.
Never heard of Mary Rose. I will ask my mother and aunt as they were basically raised by Mary McAndrew. They knew nothing about Mary Ellen but maybe it was never talked about. We should definitely do the DNA.

I was mistaken. It was FRANCIS Pittman who was killed in the accident. Augustus was his (previously deceased) father. Date of death for Mary Ellen was August 31, 1934.
Francis was born in 1909, and was listed as a daughter in the 1920 census.

So looking for anything on Cormac Quinn, there's someone born2-22-1909 d.3-16-1965 age 56. Came to US 1925 age 20 on the Columbia. Served as a Private at the 48 General Hospital WW2. Buried in Long Island Nat'l Cemetery, E. Farmingdale, NY. Think he's Mary Ellen's brother?

I have his birthdate as May 2, 1909. It is possible, I guess. But the date I have seems pretty secure (within a week at least.) The birth registers are searchable on irishgenealogy.ie . I didn't see a second Cormack (or Cormac) Quinn lested on the site, born in 1909. It seems a fairly safe guess. Have you seen the ship's list? Does it list any family?

I looked. The Cormac Quinn buried in NY was born to Thomas Quinn and Bridget McGready on May 22, 1905. This is a different family, although possibly a related one, since they are from Mountcharles. The father, Thomes, was NOT an Uncle of Mary Agnes and Cormack, the children of Agnes McAndrew.

Interesting. Let me know if you find him. There are so many missing pieces. I will keep you posted too.

I will, certainly. I have been looking, again, but so far nothing positive.
