The following information may help you sort out your Elizabeth (Cook) Markle inquiries:
"Several months after this marriage, Elizabeth's husband, "Compeign" was killed in a logging accident, and their son, Luke, was born on November 3rd, 1818, after his father's death.
(Family tradition has it that Luke was born either at Cooksville, Toronto, Peel, Ontario, Canada or "Muddy York" now Toronto; however his Death Certificate gives the location as New York State - this could be a n error.) Jacob made the statement that Elizabeth's son "will be my son and bear my name," and he legally adopted the infant Luke." From "A genealogical sketch of the descendants of Andrew and Anna Christina (Palmer) Cook, 1769-1970" by John Houser, Eileen Shepherd Houser, 1970.
Luke was adopted by Uncle, Jacob Cook in 1818 and changed his name to Luke Compeign Cook.
Note: The name "Compeign" does not exist as a surname. It is this researcher's opinion that Luke Cook was illegitimate, and this prompted the family's move to Canada. There is a DNA link to the Doig family, with branches then in northern New York State. [See other family file Doig].
P.S. I have recorded that Luke Compeign Cook's father was Luke Compeign who was born in New York, USA in c. 1790 and died in 1818 however I am unable to find my source. I also suspect that John William Campaign b. c. 1821 in New York, USA who was the husband of Rachel Jane Markle who was the daughter of Andrew Markle b. c.1800 was related to Luke Sr Compeign.
Wayne, Thank you so much for shedding some much needed light on this subject! I have purposefully not created a profile for him.....just because there were so many questions as to him being a historical figure. The FamilySearch attachments certainly appeared to lend credence to the claims.....but I was still put out by the issue of his surname and how that connected to Elizabeth...(unless, as you've also pointed out - he may have been illegitimate!) The explanation of adoption by Jacob Cook clears that up! Would you recommend creating a profile for him, and how would you address the issue of surname spelling....since that was apparently the one he used?
Thank you again!
Joachim
