Download the 'package', unzip it, and point to the resulting "folder" when you add a local Chrome extension.
What you can easily customize is the code which runs locally in the context of the Chrome browser. There are a couple of pieces which run on a different Internet server (i.e.: the login authorization and the copying of images), but everything else run within the browser context.
You can even run both the 'standard' extension and your custom extension at the same time ... though you might want to disable one while playing with the other to minimize confusion!
