Henry was my 2x Great grandfather. This account as told by my Aunt Doreen(actually my grandmothers cousin) who was his granddaughter and looked after him at the end of his life. Could very well be complete mythology as I have not researched the facts but worth recording in case any of it turns out to be true.
Henry and brother Joseph and my great grandfather William(Ernie) maintained throughout their lives that they were heirs to a title and castle in Wales. To this Henry kept a newspaper article of what he thought were some relatives Lord and Lady Herbert or similar title(I can't remember) that had come to New Zealand to find their long lost relatives, which my Aunt unearthed after his passing. The two brothers apparently were sent as young men to join the Indian Army but only as gardeners for the general of the Indian Army. The man or the situation or both were so terrible that they deserted at the time of the great mutiny. Kept themselves under the radar for many years and then came to New Zealand where they changed their name from Herbert to Ryall.
Note the Herbert link to Wales as Lord Herbert did have many illegitimate children he built small castles and manor houses for but I cannot find a connection to us as yet.
