My ancestors were called Videlefsky (Polish - Widelewski). Fled to the US around 1905-1910 and came from Vikija. Videlefsky is a very rare name. If anyone had any other leads I would be very grateful.

Lots of Videlevski on Jewish Gen (www.jewishgen.org) including in Vikaja. Go to the home page and on the left hand side under Name type in Videlevski and choose Lithuania from the drop down menu.

What were their given names?

Many thanks Hatte. Sorry meant to say Widelewski is a very rare name in Poland, only recently discovered that would have been because it didn't originate in Poland and must have been the Polish interpretation of it.

Gotcha. That makes perfect sense now.

I have now visited Lithuania and have been told that definitely Videlefsky and Widelewski are the same name. However, I still don't have any more evidence that would link these two families together. There were a lots of Videlefskys in Vilkija, however, my family around that time were based in Poland. Does anyone have any other suggestions of websites that could link the Poles in Lithuania to a move back to Poland?

Many thanks

My wife's family comes from Kovno (Kaunas). Her grandfather, Jacob Rubin, was born in Kovno in 1880 and came to the U.S. in 1902. His sisters also came to the U.S. in the early 1900s. His brother went to England. I don't have any other information about the family. Don't know if his last name was Rubin in Kovno or just in the U.S. Welcome any other insights that folks can offer. Is there a separate geni group for those just involved in the town and not the Kovno ghetto.
