Cynan ap Iago - Possibility that two Cynan have been conflated

The timelines for Cynan ap Iago and Ranallt are problematic.

Wolcott makes a good case for there having been a conflation of two Cynans --

The inherited line is that Ranallt married Cynan ab Iago. But that Cynan was born c 1035. Wolcott proposes that Ranallt married Iago's brother Cynan, not Iago's son; that .Cynan would have been born c. 1014.

His argument is good; here are the pages where he deals with this:

I propose that we make Cynan ab Iago into Cynan ab Idwal, add in the other cousins, and change the dates.

Yes. I object, unless I misunderstand you.

You need to keep both in, one as Cynan ap Iago ap Idwal, and his uncle Cynan ap Idwal. Both had sons named Gruffudd. Some children need to be moved from Gruffudd ap Cynan ap Iago to Gruffudd ap Cynan ap Idwal, namely Rhael and Idwal(abbot of Penmon,) both circa 1075. I think I have the other children assigned correctly now.

And Ranallt needs to be assigned to Cynan ap Idwal. As Wolcott points out, Cynan ap Iago is too young to be married to Rhanallt, and it was Cynan ap Idwal who fled to Ireland to escape Gruffudd ap Llewelyn
