My mother, Edith Howard, was born and raised in Watsonville, CA. Around the age of 5, in approximately1937, her father, James Howard (who was said to be much older than her mother) passes away. In about 1938 my mother's mom (my true maternal grandmother), Edith Howard (Mullnix), passed away in her sleep (my mother awoke to find her mother dead next to her in bed). Her half sister, the former Della Trusty, now at this time married to Lynn O'Dell, took my mother in, and raised as her daughter and we all grew up calling Della Grandma, or "Granny" O'Dell. Her brothers & sisters, whom I was raised to call aunts & uncles, were in fact her nieces & nephews, and my cousins. My "Granny" was in fact my "half-aunt" if you want to be technical about it.

I don't know if you have this information at all, but your discussion peaked my interest and I found a couple items I wanted to share.

This appears to be your mother in the 1940 census.

If you look at the image you will find her mother on the next line.

This record may be of your maternal grandmother as well:

Here's Della in 1920 :

Seems your grandmother may have been married at least 3 times and children with each. Your family could be much larger than what you have on your tree.

Here's the marriage record for that 2nd family:

And finally the big piece I really wanted to pass on, Marriage record to Della's Father:

Jonathan! Thank you sososo much! I just learned many many things I never knew about my family before and verified vague ideas I had but wasn't sure about. If you can learn anything about James Howard, my paternal grandfather, such as birth cert or dearh and dearh cert for Edith Mullnix/Trusty/Howard, I would really be grateful. Are you related or just a good samaritan?
