Janet Deborah Fuls (Butterill) stated:
I think his mother is the other wife of his father.

Rich Denius replied:
Hi Janet,
Thanks for reaching out to us. What have you found that led to this conclusion?
I see conflicting evidence for both cases.

Jacob Koch Hoover was born in 1698.
Barbel (Barbara) Huber (Lier/Luyer) died in 1700.
If these dates are accurate, Barbel is the first wife of Jacob's father Hans Ulrich Huber and the woman most likely to be Jacob's mother.

The second wife of Hans, Margaretha Huber (Koch), was born in 1672 and lived until 1745. She would have been age 26 when Jacob was born, so she is old enough to have been his mother, but once again, the first wife Barbel died in 1700, so based on that, Margaretha probably wasn't in the picture yet in 1698.

What complicates this though is that someone has listed the Marriage of Hans to Margaretha as occurring in 1697. Also http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/f/o/x/George-Fox/GENE3-0016.html points to Margeretha as Jacob's mother. So where does Barbel fit in?

Can anyone help clear this up?

Janet replied:
Find a Grave has Margaret as his mother.

As Rich noted, if one believes the marriage date of Jacob & Margaret (Margaretha), then Jacob is most likely Margaret's Margaretha Huber child.

There's conflicting 'tree' reporting on Barbel's (Barbel Huber) death, ranging from "after 1711" to "1698", with most seeming to copy "1700".

Anytime I see an "old" year-only date (pre 1800) ending in zero or 5, I mentally assume it is a 'circa' (+/- 5 years, minimum) date unless there is evidence otherwise. So, Barbel (Barbara) may have died as a result of complications after the birth of her child Hanseli in 1695 (see Hans Ulrich's timeline: Hans Huber). Of course, there are any number of other reasons which one may conjecture about the relationships between Hans, Barbel, and Margaret during that time...

So I'm okay with switching Jacob to be Margaretha's child, barring counter-evidence.

Since there is conflicting dates for Barbel's death I agree with the change of parentage to Margaret- unless someone else objects with counter-evidence.

According to the Lancaster Mennonite Vital Records Jacob was the son of Margaret Koch. They have four sources listed
"Lanc. C.H. Misc. Book pub 1765, p. 176"
"Stauffer Gen. (AKS) , p. 229"
"Huber Gen. p. 42
"Eberly Gen. - Gerlach

Can Jacob`s mother be changed now? I think there enough sources to indicate that Margaret is his mother. Thank you very much.

Jim took care of that change.
