How to format text in projects

When you are editing the text in a project page, there are buttons across the top for achieving formatting.
I found this when I wanted to put in a link to my father's profile Jack Morphett Henderson.

What did I find?
I found that the buttons insert the formatting characters needed in "wiki text" to achieve formatting, such as square brackets to produce hypertext links, like this:
[http://geni.com the homepage for Geni], which I made with this:
<pre>[http://geni.com the homepage for Geni].</pre>

Ah, but these discussion threads don't use wiki text like that.
