From Patricia Griffith at the Clement-Clements-Clemmons DNA Project:

"John Clements b 1631 England, d by 1710, Surry Co VA was imported by Jeremiah Clements into VA in 1635. He married unknown 1st, and Mary (Thompson?) 2nd. John gave deposition in Surry Co VA in 1701 that he was 70 years old. He was a headright for Jeremiah Clements in 1635, and was probably a member of Jeremiah's extended family. He was not a son of Jeremiah as Jeremiah left all his lands to his daughter, Elizabeth Perry. JEREMIAH CLEMENTS HAD NO MALE HEIRS."

More info here--note, newer editions of "Adventures of Purse and Person" show Jeremiah with no male heirs.

Was Edith Clements his wife? If not, does anyone know whose wife she was?

Some genealogies only show his wife as Edy or Edey, no last name. I'm seeing three different marriage dates--not sure if a marriage record survived. There is a headright record of his transporting "Edy" Clements, his wife. I'll see if I can find anything on the Pierce side of the family. Her sister is Jane Pierce who was the 3rd wife of John Rolfe--hopefully there is some good research out there on the Pierce family.

(For anyone else researching Jeremiah--some records show him as Jeremie, Jeremy.)

Daughter Elizabeth married Capt. Henry Perry. Some trees show him as the second husband of Edith Pierce Clements--this assumption comes from the records showing Henry Perry marrying the "heretrix" of Jeremiah Clements.

However, I found this:

The Virginia Genealogist, Vol 19, No 4, Oct-Dec 1975, p 255, "Inquisitions on Escheated Land, 1665-1676", p 121, Surry Co, VA,
May 20, 1670, Jury find that Wm. Gapin was at the time of his death seized of 200 acres lying at Upper Chipoakes in the sd county by patent granted to Jeremiah Clements and several assignments came to Wm. G rweapin, and also 100 from Henry Perry Esqr. And Elizabeth his wife, and cannot finde that he disposed of the 300 acres by deed, conveyance or gift or that he made any bequest hereof by will or otherwise nor that he did have any lawful heir to claim the same and therefore the 300 acres doth escheat.

I have John Clements 1631-1710 in my tree, however, the wives and children are different, so they may be different people entirely.

John Clement, Sr.

It may take a while to sort out all the differences!
