Do we have a source for the 3 August 1690 birthdate? FFYP has a 27 May 1691 baptism doc: "Jsia, zoon van Willem Nel de Moeder Jannetie, jis dedoopt de 27 Maij 1691 als getuijgen Jan De Plessis en [. . .]" http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/e629.htm

but no birth date?

And then the question of whether he is born 4th or 5th.

Sharon I once took photos at the Pretoria Archives from the original christenings. What I did notice is that in the early days the birth date was not given but the ages of the children. From one household would be a few children, aged from 1 month to 18 years.

I think we discussed this once and decided to rather use the christening date and say born before that date. It is a difficult situation.

I would rather have it we don't give a birth date at all, unless we have an age from a source to give a ca d.o.b.

Any other suggestions?

Stay well.

Judi, since Geni has given us the 'before' option, it makes sense to use that if we only have a christening date. If there is a primary document showing the age in years of the child (which suggests they were christened late) - then that should be used in preference.
Leaving the field empty when we have primary documentation to provide a 'before' range is a very unhistorical treatment of data.

Thanks Marie - the baptism date we have, but a whole lot of these profiles have birth dates as well - They're specific enough to suggest that there might be primary sources for them somewhere.
