US Army Brigadier General, US Congressman. During the Revolutionary War, he served as an officer in Colonel Preston's rifle regiment. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1785, commenced the practice of law in Fincastle, Virginia and was a member of State House of Delegates, 1789 to 1824. In 1809, he was elected as a Federalist to the Eleventh Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1817. He also was an associate of Thomas Jefferson in the establishment of the University Virginia and served as a US Army Brigadier General in the War of 1812. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
