Jan Hugens DID marry Maria Trepels but not until 1839, 5 years after Mathijs' birth.

I am not actually sure that Machtilda and Maria are the same name, perhaps Mathijs' mother (Machtilda) was a sister of Maria?

Well someone thinks Maria = Mechtilda

Mechtilde:

Maria and Mechtilde do appear to be the same woman.
She is named Mechtilde at birth and death, her death record lists her partner as Jan Hendriks Hugen (who we know married Maria).
I think Jan married young, had a family then his wife died so he married a younger woman, after Jan died she married again to Pieter Craenen(?)....

Unless Pieter was her first husband? But there is no mention of her being a widow when she marries Jan?

Oops, i actually re-read the Dutch text that i posted a couple of days ago.

In abbreviated form it says Maria/Mechtilde had:
1) relationship with an unknown man
2) marriage to Jan
3) marriage to Pieter

The site doesn't give any details for children but it seems obvious to me that the only way anyone would know she had a relationship with an unknown person is if there was a baby 9 months later. So i think Mathijs' father is NN

Ok so i did some number crunching on the hypothesis that Mathijs' father was Jan Hendrik Hugens and that there had been an affair between Jan and Mathijs' mother while Jan was still married to his first wife.

Mathijs is born 1834.
Maria de Silve (Jan's first wife) dies October 1838
Jan and Mechtilde Triepels(Mathijs' mother) marry May 1839
Mechtilde has a baby (Frans) in Jan 1840

The birth of Frans in January shows that Mechtilde was pregnant when she married Jan in May the year before, assuming a nine month pregnancy Frans was conceived in April 1839 which was six months after Jan became a widower.

I think on balance that a man who had been a widower for 6 months getting a woman pregnant and then marrying her is not in any way suggestive that this man is also the unnamed father of that woman's child who had been born 5 years earlier out of wedlock.

Probably best to go with NN father unless there is proof
