Margaret Kennedy was born in Ireland in 1828, as were both her parents.

She married James Bennett Smith on January 9, 1859, at the Mission of San Juan Bautista in San Benito County, California.

The 1900 US Census, Monterey County, states that there were eight children, only two of which survived to adulthood according to records found so far.

They were: Frederick, William and Warren. Research is ongoing to confirm the others.

A son, Frederick Henry Smith, went on to marry Sara Watson, the daughter of Sheriff Thomas Watson (1866-1871), thus the two families became related by marriage.

The 1880 Census for Monterey County shows Margaret as being single, working as a store clerk and living with two sons: William age: 20 and Frederick, age: 12, in Castroville, CA.

The 1900 Census Lists: Marriage Year: 1860 (1859?), Years Married: 40.

Margaret passed away on December 9, 1909, in Salinas, CA.
