I am intrigued and wonder whether anyone can enlighten me. One of my forefathers is James Gilbert Steward Robertson. I came across Gilbert Stuart, a Scottish journalist and historian, who was born in Edinburgh in 1742, He was the professor of Latin and Roman antiquities at Edinburgh University, when Lord (Dr) William Robertson (1721 - 1793) was the principal of the university. Gilbert applied unsuccessfully for the professorship of public law and blamed Lord Robertson for his failure to get the position. He never forgave Lord Robertson and a duel was fought in 1785 between Gilbert Stuart and William, the son of Lord Robertson. Both survived the duel. What I want to know is why my family would honour the name of Gilbert Stewart by incorporating it in a Robertson name (James Gilbert Steward Robertson) when there was such bad blood between the Stuart and Robertson families of yore? Or is it just coincidence (considering that Stuart is spelt Steward in the name)? Second question: anyone who knows anything about the forefathers of James Donald Robertson, born in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland (1862 - 1898), please get in touch with me. He died in Ladybrand, South Africa.
