In researching my husband's family tree, I have found several generations of Spotswood Green(e). These Spotswoods were black or mulatto. The earliest one was born in 1838 in Virginia. The1880 Census shows a Spotswood Green born ~1838 living in Cedar mountain, Culpeper, Virginia. From the picture we have found of the middle Spotswood Green(s), he was a well dressed, well groomed gentleman. He was born in May 1850 in Virginia. What I am wondering is if there could be any connection to a servant or slave of the Spotswood household?

"Spotswood" (also "Spottswood") is a not-uncommon Virginia first name, and it is *not* exclusively black. This may be another "Greenberry" situation (everybody and his uncle named sons after the Governor, and the name became "traditional").
