My name is Miles Masterson, a journalist and author. I am currently researching a book on the life of John Thornton Whitmore, who was the only son of Dorothy Dot Whitmore nee Moller and Percy Thornton Whitmore.
I am not sure if you are aware how famous John 'The Oom' Whitmore is, as he was a pioneer in South African diving, surfing, surfboard building and Hobie Cat circles and starred in Bruce Brown's world famous Endless Summer movies and did a radio surf report on Radio Good Hope for many years. His extended family through marriage to Thelma Whitmore nee Krause also links him to the Paarman clan, many of them world famous surfers etc. The book I am writing will be focusing on this and more, as he led a jam-packed adventurous life and was a true African pioneer.
It would be really great if I could find out more about John's family tree. I am not looking for great detail, just slightly more information about his mother Dot, father Percy and their divorce and origins as well as his Afrikaan fraternal family - the Moller family. Anecdotal research from a source he knew him indicates that John Whitmore spent time with a Moller family in Walmer, Port Elizabeth in the late 50s and early 60s.
All of this background will go a long way to helping to fill in John's formative years and influences growing up in Glengarriff road in Sea Point etcetera. I have been in contact with many of John's directly family members, including his daughters and grandsons, and they all know very little about John Whitmore's family background.
