Alan Jay Silverstein was born on June 20th, 1946, in Harlem, NY. He was the oldest of three brothers. He received diplomas from Bethpage High School, Cornell University, and later, Albany Medical School where he graduated at the top of his class as the valedictorian. Among Alan's many achievements, he was an: Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, an intramural champion wrestler at Cornell University, VP of his college fraternity house Tau Epsom Phi, Fellow in Obstetrics & Gynecology, a published author (Menopause: A Basic Guide for Women, August 1996, publisher Jain Publishing Co ,U.S.), a sailor (deckhand on freighter sailing around S. America and Africa, then a first-class waiter aboard the SS United States with his two brothers, later a fisherman aboard fishing boats out of Florida), SCUBA diver/instructor, and an overall student of life and learning. At the age of 40, Alan suffered a stroke. Alan took miraculous strides to recover, and although he overcame great obstacles, he ultimately lost his medical career and practice in which he was the senior partner. In his retirement, Alan volunteered some time in Israel with Sar-El, a unit of the Israeli army for non-Israeli, worldwide volunteers. Years later, when his parents became ill in Florida, he moved in with them to be their caretaker; comforting and attending to their every need. Alan later began spending time in Bonaire where he taught others to scuba dive and protected the coral reefs by hunting lion fish. At the age of 70, Alan was an active diver in great shape and physical health. Tragically, Alan's life was unexpectedly cut short during a scuba dive in Bonaire on the afternoon of November 5, 2016. Alan was survived by a significant other, his two brothers, two sons, a daughter, a niece, and many nephews. He will be missed.
