I got hold of a copy of the Proceedings of the Committee for Privileges, “Earldom of Annandale and Hartfell” ordered by the House of Lords to be printed July 23, 1985" on pg. xxxi it states:
“This statement clearly alleges that the sons of 'John Johnstone Stapleton officer in Dumbarton Regt.' included Gabriel Johnston Governor of North Carolina (1699-1752) and his brother Samuel; however, It can be established beyond resonable doubt that Governor Johnston and his brother Samuel were the sons of the Revd. Samuel Johnston, Minister of Southdean during the last years of the 17th Century."
I did more research and discovered that Revd. Samuel's wife was Isobel Hall, and that the Revd. graduated MA of Edinburgh in 1677, was successively minister of Southdean, Roxburgh in 1690 and of Dundee in 1699."
According to this, the lineage is not as posted here.
