I am hoping you might be able to help me with the Connel/Connell name. About 20 years ago I had my 4th Great Grandfathers will. It has since burn up when my house went up in flames 1993. Never the less my Connel line is from the state of Indian Mound Stewart County Tenn. and possible from Virginia. My 4th Great Grandmother is Marry James was born in Goochland Virginia. She married William Pickney Verhines on 10 Nov 1840, he lived in Indian Mound as stated above. In his will dated and filed in Stewart count Tenn.2 years before he died I found Francis Marion Connel named as his Step-Son. Also in Williams Fathers will Francis Marion Connel was named as his step-Grandson. His mother Mary James Connel gave birth to him Mar 1836. She was his second wife of William VerHines. This Mary James Connel I am speaking of is the Aunt of Frank and Jesse James. Her brother Rev. Robert Sally James is there father. Best guess I can make is Mary James Connel gave birth out of wedlock to Francis as I have found no record of any marriage to this Connel, although her name was at the marriage Mary James Connel. This is only conjecture on my part, her family is very well documented on her parents side and her married side to William John Pickney VerHines son of Averhart Verhines 1760 of Germany and Matilda Williamson 1770 of North Carolina. She had 5 or 6 ? children with William and helped raise his first 4 or 5 ? children as I suspect Elizabeth Garrett his first wife died but again I have no record. Francis Marion Connel took his Step-Fathers name VerHines and changed it slightly to VerHaines and Married Mary Ann Austin. I can find no record of this Connel name or any connection at all. I am hoping this may spark a thought in your genealogy assisting me with this dilemma. For me it is a dead end. I know the name is Irish but other than that I know nothing about him. Any thoughts, help or direction would be very helpful.
Sincerely,
Danell Paul Guasp
Your information was helpful for me on my own quest about Marion Francis Verhine. He is the Grandfather of my Maternal Grandfather, (James Clayton Keatts, from Stewart County, TN) James Clayton Keatts is the son of Mary Dallas Verhine (Verhaines) and James Anderson Keatts, (all from Stewart County, TN). Mary Dallas Verhine (Verhaines) is the daughter of Marion Francis Verhine and Mary Austin. My Grandfather James Clayton Keatts told me a few stories passed down from his "Great Aunt Mary" about Jesse James. If you see this post and are interested in sharing stories and information, just reply. Thank you. Kind Regards, Cindy
Per: our conversation, I can find no confirmed link between Jesse James' and Keatts, Connell, or Verhines line. Frances Marion (Connell) Verhines' Mother was Mary Connell. Apparently, she gave birth to Jacob Connell & Frances Marion Connell out of wedlock. Later, she married William Verhines and helped raise his children from first marriage and then they had children of their own. Jacob and Frances Marion took the Verhines name. Mary Connell's Mother was Mary James Connell and she married John Connell. They migrated to Robertson County, TN out of South Carolina.
