I'm looking for more information on my 5th great-grandfather, William Robert Rayburn (Rabourn). We know he lived in Virginia and was one of Daniel Boone's "Axemen", helping open the Wilderness Road in 1775. We know of his 9(?) children, 2 wives and partner, date of death, final KY location and so on.

However, our research stops here and we've been unable to locate any other info. For instance, his parentage, country of birth and other such info is either missing entirely or lacking any certainty. There is record of his coming to Virginia from England by ship but it is uncertain whether he originated in the UK or simply visited and returned. Some records show him as born in Virginia, while others claim he's English or Scottish. Still, some family trees name one set of parents, while others name another set of parents. Some decades ago, my family hired a professional genealogist, who was unable to locate any records to quell the family debates over William.

I would like to trace our specific line into Scotland but cannot until I know more about William. Any info others may have is appreciated. Thank you.
