From what I understand, he was not the one hung. There is a story that he was a doctor that helped a young girl that had a child out of wedlock. He and the girl's mother had to "sit on the gallows" while the girl was hung, I believe. Here it is:

One of Salem was Executed for murdering her child born in fornication. Doctor Emery & ye mother of ye woman sat upon ye Gallows an Hour. Quarterly Courts of Essex co. Massachusetts Vol. 1- VIII Essex Institute, Salem, Ma. 1911-21 is found that he was punished for public drunkeness a least eight times between 1667 and 1674 and forcursing and swearing in 1679.
