I am in contact with a descendant of Alexander & Mary Montgomery. Some believe Mary is Alexander's 2nd wife. Alvin D. Montgomery is this descendant, &, he states that Anna Sutherland WAS the name of Alexander's 1st wife. He stated the records that back this, can be found in the Amherst County courthouse in Virginia. I am not able to travel to Virginia to do any research. Perhaps someone who is participating in researching this line, can visit the courthouse.
He also stated, that, the name of Alexander's father, was named Hugh. And, his grandfather was named John. And, that both Hugh & John lived on a Montgomery estate near Glasgow, before coming to the Colonies. A number of researchers have Alexander as being the son of William Montgomery & Isabella Burnett. Is it possible, that, Hugh is the sane person as William (ex: William Hugh, or, Hugh William)? But, this William is associated with the House of Brigand, which is located in the south of Ayrshire. While, Alvin indicates the Glasgow area, as where our line originated.
In other research that I have done, I have found a David Lang, the son of Ann Montgomerie of the Langshaw/Lainshaw branch.& Alexander Lang, around 1685. Ann, was an heir, &, David changed his surname to "Montgomery", in order to share n her inheritance.
Is it possible, this how our line became "Montgomerys"? Or, is our line the last surviving line that descends from Roger de Montgomery? Any thoughts???
