The Holmes Line In England this name was usually spelled Hulme and the family has been established in that country from the time of William the Conqueror

In the records of Freehold New Jersey it is written Hulmes and Hullmes and it has similar forms in the earliest records of New England
The form at the head of this article is that now in most universal use in this country

The line here traced begins with Robert Hulme of Reddish in Lancashire England who was a tenant of John Reddish Esq in 1569

His will made August 11 I602 was proved at Chester January 28 1605 exactly two weeks following his burial at Stockport another suburb of Lancashire

In the records of his burial he is called Ould Robert Holme of Redich Alyce wydow of Robert Hulme of Reddiche was buried at the Collegiate Church now Cathedral of Manchester September 7 1610

Their son Robert Hulme husbandman of Reddish made his will August 20 1640 and it was proved at Chester November 24 1649

He left his estate to his sons Robert, Obadiah, Samuel and Joseph There is record also of several other children

Obadiah Holmes son of Robert 2 Hulme founder of the family in this country was baptized March I8 1610 at Didsbury and was living in the town of Reddish in 1633 /...
