From Patricia Eakins:

We believe that our Eakinses went from Belfast/Ulster to Pennsylvania. My great-great-grandfather was David Eakins,
born in 1782 and married to Maria Ray McGregor. The family went from PA to Illinois then Iowa.

Samuel Tigert Eakins, the brother of my great-grandfather, was married to Clara Maria MacDowell, and they had a daughter named Cora May Eakins, who was married to Samuel Gross. We believe that the painter Thomas Eakins was a cousin of my great-great-grandfather, David Eakins, that Samuel Gross is the "Gross" of the Gross Clinic painting, and that Clara Maria MacDowell is the sister of Susan MacDowell, the wife of Thomas Eakins. Any connection to your group in Pennsylvania?

Hi Jennifer,

Have you been able to find any living, male, direct Eakins descendants of David Eakins that have done a Y-DNA test or who might be willing to do so?

My own Eakins line came from Ireland to Ontario, Canada and I have just now sent in my Y-DNA test sample and have joined the "Akins" DNA project on Family Tree DNA. This project seems to hold out the best hope of finding a connection, if one does exist, between the various Eakins lines in North America.

BTW, I have the wife of David Eakins as Maria Rae McGregor: information provided to me by Linda Grinder (wife of a great-grandson of Samuel Tigert Eakins.

HI Again Jennifer,
Just wanted to let you know that I have now done the Y-DNA test in addition to the standard DNA tests with both Ancestry and 23andme.
Have you done a DNA test?
I would love to find a living Eakins descendant in both your own line and that of Thomas Eakins, the painter. Finding living Eakins descendants and getting them to take the Y-DNA test would go a long way towards determining if our various North American Eakins lines are connected.

Hi James, I apologize for not responding to your first email, I haven't been on the Geni sight in some time. I have done a DNA test through ancestry. Are you on this sight as well?

Yes, I am on Ancestry.ca and I have done the Ancestry DNA test. My user name is JamesEakins (no space). Easiest way to find my Ancestry trees is to search for my father, James Robert Norris Eakins. Between myself and my younger sister, we have seven (7) trees on Ancestry.
If there is an actual connection between our two Eakins lines (hopefully DNA will help out), I expect I would be a 1st cousin, 4 times removed of Samuel Tigert Eakins. This is just a guess, based upon the dates of our two lines: absolutely nothing proven in fact as yet.
Feel free to contact me directly at jim.eakins@ns.sympatico.ca

Hi James,

This is so interesting! I will get on Ancestry when I have a moment and try to connect. I am in the middle of selling my house and moving cross country so things are a little crazy right now.

Jennifer

Good luck with both selling your house and with the long distance move.
Jim
