I've just realised that many years ago Dad gave me a copy of Thomas Lonergan's death certificate. It was issued in 1983. On this it states, as we know, he was born in Ireland and had been in NSW for 49 years at the time of his death. It also states he married Bridget McGoldrick in Sydney at the age of 32. This would definitely dispute Uncle Thomas saying they were married in Ireland.
I have no idea where the original copy of this certificate is as I haven't found anything in Dad's papers.
I have just gone into the tree. You certainly have been very busy.

that is great Elaine! Yes very busy - i have put question marks for thomas's parents as can't be definite but it will do for now. Once I have a list of all the information i need i will sign up to ancestry.com - they seem to have a monopoly on most of the national archives around the world eg census records, electoral rolls, bdm etc
HI Elaine
just been thinking about dates - according to the birth certificate Thomas would have arrived circa 1846 (in colony for 49yrs) age 31 and married in 1847 at age 32; which would mean the marriage i found 1849 to a bridget magauberick is not the one - problem is i can't find any other marriage that might fit.
hopefully will find out more when i join ancestry.com

I'm disappointed to say that I have to agree with you re the above marriage certificate. I keep thinking that for Dad to have a copy of Thomas's death certificate then Dad himself must have been looking into all this information. Sadly I can't find anything at all in his papers. And that also surprises me. Why would he have his great grandfather and not his own parents. I applied for death certificates of them both. I've asked Mum a couple of times but she says there are no more papers anywhere else in the house.

hi Elaine
Maybe there will be some info on the death certificates? I have hit a wall with everything - there is really no way of knowing
Thomas is listed as a 'miner' on census documents. John McEwan, Jane Ann's father. is listed as a publican in Maitland in the census.
It would be interesting to find out more about their lives

Hi Josephine
I've just looked again at the death certificate of Thomas Lonergan. The occupation for Thomas was noted as a "farmer". The name of father and occupation and name and maiden name of mother has been entered as "unknown". The informant on Thomas's death was his son, also named Thomas.
I've got to agree with you. It's frustrating not being able to go any further. I would love to know more about their lives. I personally get a little fed up and don't do anything for sometime. That's why it has taken me a couple of days to answer this.

hi Elaine, sorry it has taken so long to respond - i subscribed to ancestry.com but have not found it very useful so far. Some years ago a 'Mark Middleton' contacted my father about the family tree - i was up to my elbows in babies at the time and didn't follow up. I do recall that he was living in Mt Helen (suburb of Ballarat). I have found a Mark Middleton in Ballarat and have emailed him enquiring whether he is one and the same but haven't heard anything. I have a feeling he was a second cousin on the lonergan side - will let you know if i get a response. Hope all well

I'm really sorry that I haven't made contact again before this. I just haven't been into the site for quite some time. Everything here is going along as usual. Nothing exciting at all.
I hope by now you may have heard from 'Mark Middleton' and he is able to give you more information.
I've just opened a strange email from you with a link on it. I must admit I wasn't sure just what I was opening but because it was from you I hit on the link. Did you send an email yesterday with a link attached? I'm hoping it was from you and that we haven't been hacked. I deleted it rather quickly so I didn't really get the idea of what I was opening.
I am still waiting for the information on the O'Mara side of the family from the family member. I'd really like to see what information it is.
Take care.
