My earliest Comerford ancestor I have pinned down in James Comerford who was born in Ireland and came to Liverpool and had largish family, who themselves went on to have largish families, so there are quite a few of us out there.

I wrote a bit on the family here:

We know from James' wedding certificate that his father was Patrick.

I thought I'd tracked down the family in Castlecomer, Kilkenny where a Patrick Comerford married a Jane McEvoy and had a son James who was baptised on 6 May 1832. However, someone seems to have thoroughly researched this family and James never left Ireland:

Recently we have been contacted by someone who matches our autosomal DNA, as a 5th to remote cousin and they have an ancestor Bridget Comerford who married in Callan, County Kilkenny in 1835. This puts her in the same generation as Patrick and suggests they could have been brother/sister or first/second cousins. It also might help us pin down where the family came from. There is, for example, a James Comerford baptised in Callan on 24 Jun 1838, whose parents were Patrick Comerford and Margaret Shea. The date is a little late (our James 67 when he died in 1900, which is consistent with his census results), but it is a start.

I've added my autosomal DNA at FTDNA (where I tested), Gedmatch and DNA.land, so if you've already tested you'll find if we match in one of those places.

Hello Bill,

This is a long shot but I was wondering if you have any information regarding a Julia Comerford, born probably in Ireland before 1832, died about 1851, probably in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She married William Hanlon in Kingston, Ontario, Canada about 1847. William Hanlon died 29 Oct 1900 in Oswego NY.

Thanks for any help with this.

Stu Wilson

Stuart,

It isn't a name I've come across in my research. The coincidence of surnames is fascinating and could always indicate a link (a son and daughter of James' married another brother and sister) but nothing I can attest to.

If they are relatives of yours, an autosomal DNA test (of the earliest generation possible) should flag up if we are related - I have my test on FTDNA (where I'm part of the Comerford project) and GEDmatch.

I see you have a Hanlon connection as well so I thought maybe we might line up there somehow too. I have my DNA autosomal done through FTDNA. I am not real good at knowing how to benefit from it yet. I did upload to Gedmatch. Is there a way for us to see if we have DNA connection?

I have Comerford as part of my ancestral names on FTDNA (always make sure to fill those out) so a search for that will find me if I'm in your family finder results. I searched for "Wilson" in my Family Finder results and didn't find you, so I suspect we aren't a match.

My GEDmatch ID is T638316 - you compare with it here by adding your own kit number:

Hi Bill,

I did a one to one search with your kit at GEDmatch and came up empty. Will keep looking!

Thanks,

Stu

Ah well, good luck with your search - it is always tricky hooking in those on the edge of your family trees as there are so few angles of attack.

If you add your tree in here and authorise the "Partner Applications" on FTDNA, then your results get matched to your tree on here and it might help get you a match (although the big plus to being on here is that if anyone is Googling their relatives then they'll crop up in the results - you never know if anyone is working down from the Irish records and finds you).

I don't have a paid membership to Geni. I played around with adding ancestors one at a time, ( i guess that's how you have to do it) until I added a Gorham ancestor that matched the main tree. I found then they wanted money to merge with the tree. I'm not sure that I want to ante up at this point so unless I missed something I don't think I can do as you suggest.

I've only ever ha the free 14 day subscription, but can do most things (other than checking the matches, but you can Google Geni.com to check for matching profiles). What I can't do I kick over to a curator.

I'm sure there are easier ways of doing it, but if you add me as a manager to the profile you want merging (and the profile you want to merge it to) I'll get it sorted out.
