Note: 29/5/1883 Death index - William George CHAPMAN - father George died. Born 1814?. Spouse Elizabeth. Other people Elizabeth van Heythuysen ( possibly incorrectly connected)

And she as you know was married to Aaron Peckham , so that is where I come in to the Peckham family . Hi cousin (of sorts). Sarah Chapman's daughter Mary Ann married into my CROSS family.

I have done a lot of "playing" in the tree today - separated all the children into their known fathers.

I had one profile removed from Sarah as the wife of Charlie Browne HARDWICKE was definitely not her daughter.

For the 17 (I think) children that I could find no reference to I have moved them to an unknown father whilst we figure out how they relate to Sarah.

Could you please have a look at them and add any data that you have for them - I think you added them into 2015 maybe from a my.heritage record (sorry i don't have access to my.heritage to try to find anything about them,

By 1824, Sarah had 10 children (8 of whom were still living) - I have identified 9 of these. I don't know which 2 had died by 1824. I will keep hunting

After lots of research, I have managed to match some of the unknowns up and linked them correctly with their correct parents. Still have a few that I can't find any information about so have asked for them to be unlinked from Sarah

Leanne, why do you say Elizabeth Hardwicke was not the daughter of Sarah Chapman Chapman 1781-1863 per Nile 1801. My mother told me that my grandfather ST James would often talk to the Hardwicke family as they were blood relatives. When Elizabeth Hardwicke died it was noted in her obituary that her sister was Louisa Lawson (my ggg grandmother). When Elizabeth Chapman sailed from Sydney to Tasmania in 1820 she was accompanied by Louisa and Thomas Chapman and I note that Louisa and Thomas disembarked under the surname Peckham.

When I first looked at this profile it was a mix match of many incorrect merges as detailed above. I have cleaned it up as best I could find information about the family. There may very well be other information than I could find.

For Elizabeth CHAPMAN to have married in 1820 to HARDWICKE she must have been born sometime before 1804 (age 16 at marriage). To be the daughter of Sarah she had to have been born after 1797 (mother age 16 at birth). So we are looking for a daughter born between 1797 and 1804.

When Sarah was transported in 1801, there is no record of her having an infant with her. (that I have been able to find)

She had a daughter Elizabeth HARRIS in 1802 (father is John HARRIS) - It would be extremely unlikely for her to have a second living daughter with the same name. Is it possible that this is the Elizabeth who married HARDWICKE?

She then had children to Aaron PECKHAM - Mary Ann 1805, Louisa 1807, John 1809, Thomas 1810. So Elizabeth CHAPMAN would have had to have been born after Elizabeth HARRIS is 1802 and before Mary Ann PECKHAM in 1805. Again unlikely that child would have been called Elizabeth CHAPMAN, unless Elizabeth HARRIS had passed away.

Have you any other information on Elizabeth CHAPMAN, so we can determine if she is the same person as Elizabeth HARRIS or another daughter of Sarah CHAPMAN?

Hi Leanne,
my mother was aware that a Miss Hardwicke of the H family would often ride from wherever to speak to my grand father Samuel Thomas James about matters dealing with horses. My mother was told that Miss H was a relative. Also, when Elizabeth Hardwicke died it was mentioned in her obit that her sister was Louisa Lawson wife of John Lawson.
I spoke and communicated with one of the H family (Stewart Anderson who wrote the book about CB Hardwicke) in the 1970s and it transpired that the H family had assumed that Elizabeth was Elizabeth Jones. But that identification fails for several reasons.
Elizabeth, Louisa and Thomas boarded a cutter in Sydney in 1819 under the name Chapman and when the arrived in Port Dalrymple their surname was recorded as Peckham (from memory 40 years ago). Also Louisa used the name Peckham once in Tasmania.
I am certain that: Elizabeth Chapman born 1802 married CB Hardwicke.

Hi Leanne, I will have to dig into my archives but, from 40 year old recollections Louisa Chapman/Peckham had a child or perhaps 2 children to a Baker, then to a Richard Lawson (possibly no relation to John Lawson) and the married John Lawson.

Hi Byron, My cleanup was because of a huge mess created by a lot of incorrect merges (based on an incorrect my.heritage tree). I couldn't at the time, find any info on Elizabeth Chapman married to Hardwicke that showed she was the daughter of Sarah Chapman so i had her removed, knowly that this discussion would allow us to track her and easily reconnect her if appropriate.

I think it is more likely that Elizabeth Chapman and Elizabeth Harris are the same person, rather than Elizabeth Chapman being the sister of Elizabeth Harris.
If you want to merge them, i have no objections. The addition of source documents would assist others looking at these profiles.

He married Peckham in 1828, then had his children with Little 10 years later.
I will ask my sister Lorrae to see if she has more information too.

Leanne, yes, Elizabeth Haris (dau. of Sarah Chapman and John Harris) and Elizabeth Chapman/Peckham who married Charles Browne Hardwicke in Launceston 1820 are one and the same. My forbear Louisa Lawson nee Peckham/Chapman is mentioned in Elizabeth Hardwicke's death notice. They were half sisters.

Leanne, from memory John Harris was the surgeon on the convict ship on which Sarah Chapman arrived. In the NSW archives there is a letter that Sarah Francis nee Chapman wrote to Governor Brisbane and she mentions that she has had ten children, "eight now living."

Sarah Chapman was technically charged with highway robbery - "with force and arms on the King's highway" it says on the court record. I wonder what drove her to that.

The surgeons on the
- "Minorca" was George Longstaff
- "Nile" was Joseph Hislop
- "Canada" was J N Kelly

There was a Dr John HARRIS on "Surprize" in 1790 and the "General Hewitt" in 1814

It looks like he came on the Surprize, stayed for at least 10 years, then returned to England and then returned to Australia on "General Hewett"

He died 22/5/1838

It looks like Sarah had a relationship with him very soon after her arrival in Sydney, which was not an uncommon occurrence.
