My great-great grandfather. I'm descended from Susan Selina Griggs (usually called Selina). James Griggs did very well for himself in Franklin. He came over on the Apolline with many other English immigrants to VDL. He was a sawyer, as was his brother George, who followed with his family. They settled on Lady Jane Franklin's estate, Fernlands, at a special cheap rent so they would help clear the land for farming. James bought a general store in Franklin, from which it's likely he sold sly grog, although he was never charged. He also built a row of stone cottages in the main street in 1859 (Hobart Town Daily Mercury 3 Oct 1859). He was also active in getting a school built at Franklin (Hobart Town Daily Mercury 8 Feb 1859 p.2). The Griggs family were Congregationalists. I found a photo of George Griggs, but have never managed to get my hands on one of James. Susan Geason
