Nathan McAlexander was the son of James McAlexander (1775-1838) and his wife Charlotte Hall, who were married March 5, 1801, in Patrick Co., VA. His father was the son of William McAlexander (1744-1822). Nathan had siblings Nancy, William, John, Jane, Sally, Onea, and David. In 1870, Nathan McAlexander was living in Mercer Co., Ohio.
