In a recent search to identify when certain ancestors came to South Africa, I stumbled on some contradictory information regard Jean du Puis and his daughter Susanna. I am not sure if Jean indeed came to South Africa. Some source give that he died in 1690 in Tulbagh while other state that he died in Jan 1688 in Amsterdam while even others state that he died in 1686 (e-family). For his daughter Susanna, I also find some different information that she was born in 1684 or 1688 in Amsterdam. Does anyone have more certain information that he indeed came to South Africa (maybe also a ship name and date?). Also when his daughter Susanna was born?
@Jean du Puis
Hi Thomas
I too am researching Jean du Puis. According to the book "French refugees at the Cape", the only info regarding him is that he married Anne Martin and they had two children, Anne Madelaine & Sussana. It appears that both children where born overseas, Anne in Paris & Sussana possibly in Amsterdam. It does not provide any dates of birth but Susanna married on 19 Feb 1702 to Estienne Bruere of Blois. She was definitely in the Cape in 1695 as she stood sponsor at Drakenstein fo a child of David Senecal, who was her sisters husband, so presumably this would be a niece or nephew.
What confuses me is also noted in this book is that Estienne Bruere was married to Ester de Ruelle and then to Anne du Puis of Amsterdam . There has got to be a mix up somewhere!!!!!
Are you able to shed any light??

Dear Hilary,
What I have found out is that Anne Martin definitely came to South Africa as a widow with her two daughters. She married Solomon der Gourney in South Africa. Her daughter Susanna married Estienne Bruere. Susanna was born in Amsterdam and baptized there on the 11 Jul. 1688 (Oude Waalse Kerk). Estiene Bruere was not married to Anna du Puis, this was a mistake. He was first married to Ester De Ruelle (1690).
Regards
Thomas
