I believe the above GENI profile describes a James Trotter (1774-1813) who is incorrectly linked to this family.
I believe it should be the James Trotter (abt. 1722-1822) who was still alive during the 1820 Scott Co., Ky. Census. James (1772-1822) is mentioned in the 1800/10/20 Census's and in several of the Scott Co. Ky. Court House records from 1822 to 1832. This includes the Will of John Mulberry who mentions his sister as Elizabeth (Mulberry) Trotter and other Scott Court records tying Elizabeth and her children Mary, George W., Margaret, John, Lucy and Eliza directly to the James Trotter who was born abt.1772 in Augusta Co. Va. and died in Scott Co., Ky. in 1822.
I will glad share these documents with anyone who would like a copy!
A great clarifying article with information, arguments and facts was written by Sylvia Trotter Anderson and can be found at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~trotter/james_tro...
With out Sylvia's info, I would have never though to pursue my membership in the "Sons of the American Revolution" !
Hi Herbert
Is this the James Trotter, of Pickaway Plains profile you mean?
Can you advise please what actions are needed to correct the Geni tree? Your sources & conclusions seem sound.
OK - so if I follow correctly, there were two James Trotter's and they've been conflated.
One (d 1813) was (presumably) the son of William Trotter & Margaret Nancy Trotter & married Elizabeth "Betsy" Mallory / Trotter
The other (d 1822) has unknown parents, married Mary Trotter & is described by Sylvia Trotter Anderson here
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~trotter/james_tro...
There are two recent merges. I will see what "merge undo" does for us & post those results.
Here's your profile pre merge - and I was wrong about the parents above, you have William Trotter & Margaret Nancy Trotter
The one (my) James (abt. 1772-1822) who died in Scott Co. Ky was the son of William Trotter (1748-1797 Scott Co., Ky.) and Margaret Keller who remarried James Stevenson abt. 1803 and lived until at least 1810 (shown on 1810 Census. James (1772-1822) was married to Elizabeth Mulberry.
The "other" James Trotter (1774-1813) who died in Ohio was married to Mary Beard in Augusta Co., Va. in Aug 1, 1794 by Rev. John Brown.
When looking at the Lib. of Vir. Microfilms re: Tithes, Deeds et al it appears that from at least 1760's to 1790 their are at least two TOTTER families in Augusta Co. 1) James Trotter Sr. (1717-1807 Bourbon Co., Ky.) wife Mary and sons John?, William, James Jr., David, George, Samuel and Joseph. 2) John Trotter (died bef. Aug 19, 1777 because Chalkley mentions a William Trotter being his "Orphan"). I believe John may have had the following sons: William, Richard, Isaac and the "other" James (1774-1813) we are discussing. The problem the is how Scotch-Irish named their sons: 1st after fathers-father, 2nd after mothers-father and 3rd after the father. As you see there are 3 James and two William's between just these two Trotter families. Also the second family of John Trotter begs the question of is he the brother of James Trotter Sr. or the son?
So part of the issue to be addressed in a Geni Presentation is this

The earlier DAR records are incorrect and have been blocked going from William (1748-1797) to (James Trotter Sr. 1717-1807) I believe because earlier DAR members tried to show James Trotter Sr. as Capt. in the Augusta Militia when in fact it was his son James Jr. (1753-1827) who was the Captain and a Lawyer. who in abt. 1783 moved to Lexington, Ky. and became a Colonel in the Kentucky Militia. James Sr. was my William's(1748-1797) father and James Jr. (1753-1827) was his brother as show on William's 1797 Will also showing Williams wife as Margaret. My SAR approval postcard arrived yesterday. My application was 151 pages long, including a "Proof Argument" clarifying my line of the TROTTER family. Most SAR and DAR records list the James Trotter Sr. as the Captain which invalidates them. James Sr. did provide Patriotic Service as an Officer of the Augusta Co. Courts. From Lib. of Va. Microfilm Court Martial records, I believe that each of James Sr's., besides Capt. James Trotter Jr., sons may also qualify as Militiamen from Augusta Co.VA.
Should have said "evaluated" instead of "blocked". The DAR Note/comments:
1) JAMES B.1774 MARR MARY BEARD IS THE SON OF WM TROTTER A116167 is in my opinion incorrect and you will notice that the DAR states "PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED WITH AT LEAST ONE PREVIOUSLY VERIFIED PAPER - SEE ANCESTOR’S FULL RECORD" and it has an "Evaluating" EL status on every James Trotter and Mary Beard record.
Herbert - congratulations on getting the SAR "and" the genealogy "on the record.". I'm also relieved in a sense to find that it's been difficult to sort through. :)
Yes, I did see the data conflicts notations in DAR; presumably DAR & SAR reciprocity will get that updated correctly sooner or later.
So let's work on what needs to be done to finish conforming the Geni tree to the "best known.". We have the Master Profile tool (you see I've already applied it to a couple of profiles); two MP's cannot be merged together.
I'm a little under the weather and wonder if perhaps Jim Wile and / or Marsha Gail Veazey could help also.
The three points I am trying to explain are: 1) James Trotter (1774-1813) and wife Mary Beard are not the Scott County Ky. family but where from Cumberland Co., Ky. 2) William Trotter (1758-1797) and wife Margaret Keller of Scott Co., Ky. are not the above James Trotter's parents and 3) James Trotter (1717-1807) and wife Mary (1715-1811) are William's parents and James Trotter's (1772-1822) of Scott Co. Ky. Grandparents through William.
If you send me the URLs to each of those James Trotters, I can do the moving around for you. Your last message was very clear and I think I can follow it without messing it up but I definitely want the URLs as there are sure to be lots of other James Trotters floating around out there and I don't want to make a further mess!
Thanks Marsha this cold is forever ! maybe add distinguishing display names?
I think the links are
Capt. James Trotter (missing wife profile)
James Trotter, of Scott, KY (correct wife, not sure about the 2 William fathers )
James Trotter, of Pickaway Plains (correct wife, wrong parents)
