As a basic member I have limited storage, it seems when I upload to a profile, often historical from wiki or a gallery (open lic) it goes in to my albums.

When I upload a photo to a project, it replaces the photo for that project and also resides in my album.

Can someone please explain this and how it works, I worry about the longevity of these uploads.

"When I upload a photo to a project, it replaces the photo for that project and also resides in my album."

That's not quite right. Project photos are added, and always available on the project gallery, if there are many, then just like a profile, one is selectable as the "front" piece (default: first uploaded).

Example: this project is entirely images, and meant for use to be tagged by anyone to any appropriate profile for disambiguation utility with same name profiles:

http://www.geni.com/projects/New-England-town-seals/28205

http://www.geni.com/projects/New-England-town-seals/photos/28205

And inspecting one of the images more closely:

http://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=project&photo_id=6000...

- it is "from" the Project
- it is tagged to the profile
- date stamp: Uploaded on: September 21, 2013 at 2:17 AM [notice: this is before the project was created]
- if I look at the image from the profile it's tagged to http://www.geni.com/photo/view/6000000005033995539?album_type=photo...
I see it's in my album "icons"

Aside: this image can now be embedded within profile & project Wikitext. Not just as a gallery image. Copying the snapshot on the Geni server gives me

Strip out the preceding http surround the phrase with curly brackets {{ }} and also able to add modifying code for size & position

So in other words, I believe the image I uploaded, Waterbury Town Seal, resides in my public album "icons", and is tagged to the project(s) & the profile(s).

I haven't seen a basic member talk about running out of storage space yet. Obviously video & audio might eat it up. ....
