The mystery deepens!
There is a record for Eliza Jane Sterley (Baines) which was added by Helen Low (Painter) here on geni.com
According to this record she married an Alfred Sterley, was born one year apart from him and in a Grahamstown which is a stones throw from Port Elizabeth where Alfred was born.
She also has a fairly well mapped out genealogy showing that she was definitely born Baines.
She appears as the wife of an Alfred Sterley on at least one tree from myheritage.com:

Somebody else researching this has been in contact with me by email and claims to have in their posession a copy of some document showing that an Eliza Jane Baines married an Alfred Sterley (I am still waiting to be sent this).
As far as I'm aware, all the South African Sterleys at that time (1850s) came from a single family of 1820 settlers - it is highly unlikely that this is some other Alfred Sterley.
Finally the names Elize Jane Graham is remarkably similar to the name Eliza Jane Baines.
Putting all of this together, the evidence seems to clearly point to this being the same person and the maiden name Graham being wrong.
So it turns out my father has two different sources for this.
1) A family tree compiled by Edward James Sterley which records Alfred Sterley as having married an Eliza Jane Graham
2) He has a copy of this book: Thomas Sterley and John Matthews : 1820 Settlers, South Africa which records Alfred Sterley as having married Eliza Jane Baines
He admits it is quite likely that the tree compiled by Edward James had errors in it.
All things considered, the evidence is now clearly pointing to Eliza Jane Baines being the correct name.
Given this, I will now proceed with the merger.
