Dear Randy,

many thanks for this. We have decided to start by researching the largest Jewish communities in the region of the so called Sudetenland, or the Bohemian and Moravian borderlands ceded to Nazi Germany after the Munich Agreement. Here is the list of the most populous communities, with their Czech and German place names:

Ústí nad Labem/Aussig

Karlovy Vary/Karlsbad

Liberec/Reichenberg

Teplice/Teplitz

Opava/Troppau

Most/Brüx

Cheb/Eger

Jablonec/Gablonz

Chomutov/Komotau

Litoměřice/Leitmeritz

Mariánské lázně/Marienbad

Žatec/Saaz

Děčín/Tetschen

Břeclav/Lundenburg

Nikolsburg/Mikulov

Znojmo/Znaim

Česká Lípa/Böhmisch Leipa

Any help is appreciated. We are most interested in information about Jews living in these communities just before their destruction in 1938, but will be grateful for any reliable information.

I cc my colleague Veronika Dudková who is in charge of the project.

Thank you, best wishes,

Michal

Hi Randy,

I'm willing to assist.

1. What is the help needed?

2. What I should do? should I contact Michal directly or are you orgenizing the list?

3. We got some none Curators who would probably be able to help.

Thanks,
Oded

I have been told that my great-grandfather Gustav Bondi (1860-1941), while spending most of the year in Brno as Secretary to the municipal and later the German theatre, acted as director of the theatre in Marienbad every summer, He also contributed weekly articles to the local newspaper and all his children were born in Marienbad.

I also have information on members of the Bachrach family living in Troppau in about 1900 (all relatives of Adolf, Freiherr von Bachrach).

Best wishes

Peter Barber

What kind of help do they need? I am willing to help.

On Liberec / Reichenberg I would highly recommend the book by Isa Engelmann :

Recently I have contacted the district archive in Most as I was looking for information regarding a relative of mine. They were very cooperative and were willing to help as much as needed. This relative of mine is Anna Klein (geb. Pollak) who lived in Most for sure during 1936. She was the wife of JUDr. Emmanuel Klein whom, as far as I know, came from Most.

The more we can add to these town projects and the connected trees, the easier it will be to help the Museum.

Do you want a copy of a postcard from Maschau in Sudetenland

I am in the process of collecting information on my father's family and home. He was from Ervěnice/Seestadtl, a small town that no longer exists but was situated near Jirkov and sort of in-between Most and Chomutov. People at the Statni Oblastni Archiv v Litomericich were helpful and responsive in gathering information for me.

My wife's grandparents (Gustav and Sofie Zeissl) lived in Vierzigkuben not far from Brno. Is this in the area of interest to you?
Tony Lenn.

My grandfather and family (Bauch, Koller, Schorr) were from Teplice-Sobedruhy and Teplice. I have a good bit of information and images to share. I also have a large photograph ca. 1900 that shows my grandfather with his mother and siblings standing in front of their home in Teplice-Sobedruhy which was on the old "Judengasse" and is adjacent to the synagogue. A portion of the synagogue is visible.

My mother, Ruzena Gutmann was born in Karlovy Vary on 9th October 1929, to my grandparents Perla Ganz Gutmann and Jindrich Gutmann. They lived in Karlovy Vary until roughly 1934 when they moved to Prague.

I hope this has been helpful!
Sincerely,
Helena Goston

My grand parents owned two Kosher hotels in Karlovy Vary/Karlsbad. After my Grandfather died in 1932, my grandmother struggled on during a very difficult period of anti-Semitism and Germanification of the Sudetenland until she was forced to moved out to Prague in 1938. Leaving a local estate agent with the task of selling the hotels. She perished in Auschwitz in 1942. She had never received any payment from the agent. I have letters from my grandmother describing how difficult life was for her on arriving in Prague. Is that the kind of thing that's required?

Please everyone join the projects for the towns you are interested in and then add your public family profiles to the project so we can find everyone easily when there is a question from the museum.

I haven't checked the list, but we should have existing projects for all or most of these. If there are any missing, we can easily create a new project for the town.

Hi Randy,

What about small villages in the Sudtenland ?

for example Böhmisch Kamnitz - Česká Kamenice.

Shell we add the people to the nearest town project?

Thanks,
Oded

Hello Randy,
Let me know if I can help!
Regards,
Helena Goston

Hi Randy,
I'm happy to help. It would be useful to have the list in alpha-order, especially as town-names are added. How about Podivin?

Michal Frankl of the Jewish Museum of Prague wrote me to tell me that
the museum is embarking on a project to research the largest Jewish

Michal Frankl and his colleague Veronika Dudkova are eager for any help
we can provide. They are most interested in information about Jews
living in these communities just before their destruction in 1938, but
will be grateful for any reliable information. You can write to them
directly at michal.frankl@jewishmuseum.cz and
veronika.dudkova@jewishmuseum.cz.

I have set up a Geni project with a directory and link to the projects
for all of these towns at
http://www.geni.com/projects/JMP-Sudetenland-Project/30257. If your
tree is on Geni, please add your public profiles to these projects.

Usti nad Labem/Aussig and Karlovy Vary/Karlsbad now have project narratives and are ready for profiles.

We need plenty of help to make the Sudetenland Project work.

I'll handle Aussig and Most in few weeks time.

I've already done a lot of work on Břeclav.

My Grandparents had a store in Karlovy Vary/Karlsbad. I will post a description and photo. Sue Beasley

I need to get in touch with Isa Engelmann, can anyone help? Her old email does not seem to work and I would so appreciate any help in locating her. Thank you,
Barbara Illner Barrett

Petr Travnicek - as per Randy Schoenberg - Jewish Museum Prague Sudetenland project was cancelled or put on hold - no one is "currently" working on the Project.

There is No web site/page they created that we could see.

All we can do is work on existing Geni project pages - and create New ones, not on the list from Jewish Museum of Prague.

I am trying to sort out a connection with a Pollak relative whose documents give her birthplace as Zabloci, which at the time was Czech Silesia, but now is Zabłocie, Poland.

My Friedezky ancestors were from Troppau, along with some of their Morgenstern in-laws.

I have family from Most and from Decin. I will post more after Shabbat.
