John E Williams was my great great grandfather. He was born in North Carolina on July 25, 1823, and died in Morgan County, Indiana on Feb. 12, 1901. He is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hall, Indiana. I cannot find any ancestry prior to him. I do not know his parent's names, but they are listed on a census record as having been born in North Carolina. If I could find out his parent's names, or find someone else who has him in their family tree, I could get a lot further in trying to find the direct line in my family tree.
I don't know if I can help, but I am willing to try. I am a descendant of the N.C. Williamses and have researched the family. I am in possession of three volumes of the genealogy published in the 1990's and kept online.
You can read them at either of these two links:

Or simply google Coharie to Cape Fear : the descendants of John Williams and Katharine Galbreth of Sampson and Cumberland counties in North Carolina (1740-1990)
There are a lot of John Williamses, and not all of them are in the volumes, and not all of the information in the volumes is accurate. There is one John E Williams, born around 1822 that seems to have disappeared at some point. Since his descendants are accounted for in this recording, he is not likely to be your John E. Williams. However, he could have left the state and started a new family?
More importantly, the John E. Williams that is in our volume may be incorrect. His father, listed as Joel Williams, born between 1800 and 1804 had two wives and probably more children than have been counted. The John E. that is listed as his son is ambiguous (no exact birth year) and states, "He may be the John E. Williams whose family is described in Chapter 67, but no proof has yet been found." Furthermore, the volume clearly states that some of Joel's family stayed in N.C., others moved to Alabama, but others have disappeared.
Do you have any other information about him that might help? I'm happy to cross reference whatever you have with my records to see if we can come up with a match.
Finally, have you submitted DNA? I would also be happy to share mine for comparison. If it turns out that we don't share any DNA, I would conclude that your John Williams is from another part of the state. I have run across a pocket of Williamses that lived in the northwest section of N.C.
