Dr. John Chance did not marry Mary Justice. It was his son John Chance b. 1836 in Indiana. Mary Justice's full name is Eliza Ann Mary Justice b. in Ga. Her mother was named Nancy b. 1805 GA and can be found on the 1850 Van Buren Co., Census.
1860 Tyler Co., Texas Woodville P.O. with William Justice who is Eliza Ann Mary's brother. Two children are listed:
William R Chance b. 1856 Ar
John A Chance b. 1858 Ar
they came to Arkansas where there where two more children were born:
Elliott L 1866 AR
Hadessa? Rebecca Jane b. 1868
Something happened to John Chance b. 1836 In, he either died or they divorced, because Eliza Ann Mary Justice Chance married Josiah Williams b. 1804 TN on 15 Nov 1868 in Van Buren Co., AR. Rebecca Jane was abt two months old when she married Williams if her birth date of Sept is correct. It would seem something happened to John Chance between Jan and Nov 1868. Josiah Williams and Eliza had one known child Rhoda b. 1872. Now Eliza says on the 1900 census that she has had 8 children 5 surviving. I suspect and this is a guess, that at least two of those children were born and died while they were in Texas. There is an 8 year gap between John A Chance b. 1858 and Elliott L b. 1866.
In 1860 you will find Dr. John Chance b. 1792 and his wife Anna Clearwater b. 1793 in Cadron Twp., Van Buren Co., Ar enumerated after his son Pernell. The name has been taken as Chandl. There is also a child Eleanore age 12 b. 1848 listed with them.
Apparently Dr. John Chance's wife Anna Clearwater and he married Elizabeth Unknown Crawford 6 Oct 1862 in Conway Co., AR She was married first to James Crawford and can be found in 1850 and 1860 in Griffin, Conway Co., Ar. Whether or not they had any children I don't know. I can't find Dr. John Chance after 1860.
It seems everyone has forgotten Dr. John Chance had a son John Chance b. 1836 in Indiana who is on the 1850 census. And assumed that it was Dr. John Chance that married Eliza Ann Mary Justice. I think the confusion comes in because they abbreviated Elizabeth to Eliza Crawford on the marriage record.
I hope this clears up some of the confusion
