This may be a silly question or something that can be found out but I don't know where so I am asking. I've spent some time putting info and pictures into geni and hope it can be a repository for future generations. I have but one son and he is not really interested in family tree stuff so I am looking to place a certain amount of stuff in a repository "in cyberspace" that will live on in posterity where future generations can access it. I am wonder though if Geni is the best place for that. I don't have time to use multiple interfaces. I am thinking even if geni were to be sold or acquired it would probably be merged with some other ancestry data base as its just too big to go away. I am also hoping if I am not a paying member that my stuff will still stay there and be accessible to all. Any thoughts on these matters, or answers?

I was actually thinking about the same thing myself. All too many times a good idea starts growing, then gets sold and then "We have decided to revamp our site" comes along.

I doubt if they would revamp and get rid of things. More likely they would either go out of business or be taken over by another company that would impose their own format onto things and scrap some of what has been built by us. That's what scares me.

At this moment i don't really need 'PRO' membership. I do need data subscription, and i do *use* PRO, but if i wouldn't have it, it would be ok. In a way i thought that since i'm going to be spending so much time on here, and i know that server space and traffic are not free, i should support Geni.

I also am an educational worker, and right now i'm organising to do a series of lectures about "genealogy on the internet" at the local library, planning to teach people in part how to use Geni. I know it's a drop in the ocean, but i figured that what Geni really is, is the community, not so much the technical aspects. Another company buying Geni and doing changes which are contrary to its community will be useless.

Unfortunately i have seen the companies ignoring their communities, and destroying themselves in the process. MySpace deleting the blogs overnight with no notice, Bitcassa terminating all the paid lifelong subscriptions and not allowing people to retrieve their data, and other such things come to mind.

About your local library, - you are aware of this offer?

I don't know if it is still a valid offer since I have not seen the list of access sites has changed for years, - may be someone from Geni can answer that.

Thanks. I'll check with my library, its a good one so maybe they have it or could get it.
