Which William Johnston married Ann (Mary?) Chew

I have a direct male line to James Johnston (1736-1820) but substantiating which William was his father has turned into a challenge. It does appear that a William did in fact marry Ann Chew, but which William, the one from Annandale, Dumfries, Scotland or the one from Virginia........ I have numerous conflicting results. The web and the information therein is a mess on this one......any help is greatly appreciated !

Ken, I coordinate a group of over 100 Johnston/es who are involved in Y-DNA testing and genealogy research. Do you have a male Johnston n your line who can do his Y-DNA test? We may be able to help if he tests as I-M223 haplogroup.
