American Military located along The Pacific Rim were given a daily anti malarial called "Atabrine"...generic Quinacrine.
This med was effective for the troops & personnel. Those that suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis & Lupus (auto immune diseases) quickly realized that their symptoms of their disease were lessened & more manageable. Physicians reporting these observations back to the states
eventually lead to the first tangible treatment for Lupus. Anti malarials for over 50 yrs' have been the only drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of Lupus, the go to' first line of defense medication.
I find it interesting that many of our current treatments for various illnesses were born originally for military use.
