This is what I've been doing to cross reference related projects (note: you must be a curator or project collaborator).

- add tags to the new project: [name of project], [umbrella if any], cause_of_death. Cause_of_death is in the tag database, if you type it in, please select the existing tag word.

- add this code to the foot (bottom) of the new project page:

----

'''jump back to [http://www.geni.com/projects/Cause-of-death-portal/27730 Cause of death portal]'''
----

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>this project is in [http://www.geni.com/projects/HistoryLink/14021 HistoryLink]
{{///media.geni.com/p13/43/69/79/0c/5344483e65ec5d9e/historylink_logo_really_small_t.jpg?hash=a517bd93fda9215a60bc4a443c06b4353d8e48b5439843dfcf53d17bad801eee.1707119999|center}}

- that means the project has been added to the HistoryLink project list, which is done here:
http://historylink.herokuapp.com/projects

- use the "related project" function (to the right on the project page); edit > drop down to "cause of death portal" > done

- replace the plain text indexed placeholder with a hyperlink

In the overview for the "cause of death" project, edit > (find the right category) > replace with a hyperlink to the project > save

Example:

-- I copied the project URL from the browser bar, http://www.geni.com/projects/Lethal-Injections/27957
-- I opened up in edit mode the project overview http://www.geni.com/project-27957/edit
-- I scrolled down to the "capital punishment" grouping, and added

** [http://www.geni.com/projects/Lethal-Injections/27957 Lethal Injections]

Don't worry if this seems too much. If you need help, just post the project name here and one of us will be glad to assist.

I have been having trouble finding things in the Cause of Death portal -- categories were in odd places, or repeated, or what not --

so I reorganized the entire thing.

So if it is dreadful now, I am Very Sorry.

but if it's easier to use, then yes! that was me!

It looks fabulous to me, Anne. Greatly and muchly appreciated. I had no idea the portal would take off like this!

Looks good to me too. One question though I would have thought that the September 11, 2001 Memorial should be under a heading of 'acts of terrorism' for which there will be other projects no doubt eventually. Not 'mass murder by state'

10/24/2015 at 3:30 PM

Yes - there are other things to fix, too; the poisonings I put under accidental, but I think they need to get divided up, as some are homicides.

oh and we need an accidental gun death project.

Terry - interesting point. As a survivor of 9-11, I actually feel more comfortable categorizing that (spectacular) memorial project under the "mass murder by state" category .... And avoiding the loaded political implications of the term "terrorism" as long as I possibly can. :)

10/24/2015 at 6:02 PM

I wasn't present of course but i certainly remember news commentators saying that underlying the shock was the disbelief that the US had become victims of Terrorism for the first time. To me calling it murder by state sounds even worse!

10/24/2015 at 7:46 PM

Maybe that's part of the point. :)

At this point, I don't want to be involved with "terrorism" projects, and we went through working out a semantic wrangling for "cause of death" as an umbrella ... And we reached consensus with "Mass murder by state.". The project narrative shows how it covers a variety of historic events.

I like the reorganization!

I have submitted a few questions in the discussions, that have not be answered. I have profiles that need to be included in cause of death.

10/24/2015 at 9:36 PM

Kwame, if you have profiles they belong in, go ahead and make the project. i only question really generic categories.

ok.

here is another: murdered by political rival

Gen. James H. Clanton (CSA)

That one is a "reason" versus a "cause."

The cause of death field in Geni is the what we're likely to see on a death certificate; what the medical examiner or coroner determines is the medical reason for the cessation of life. So this would be "homicide by gunshot" (or whatever method caused him to expire) for "cause of death.".

Certainly it would make an interesting list to compile: but i don't see it as a project for this portal so much.
