There is a person who says that this Richard Smith was in Canton, Massachusetts and presumably Joseph was born there.

He is so wrong. I am from Canton and no my Smiths, yes there are Smiths in Canton with the names Richard and Joseph but his!! I have all of the Smith births.
In my Canton/Stoughton find that Richard d Feb 8 , 1728 in Stoughton, Norfolk co., Ma.
Still nothing on his son Joseph except Joseph Jr married Experience Talbot May 23, 1747.
