We know that John Burt existed but we don't have much more information than showing in this Geni profile. Can anyone jump in and help fill in details? His mother's family Agnes C. Atkinson might be an avenue for exploration.

I've already found something of interest by looking at the Atkinson line

http://www.geni.com/path/Thomas-Atkinson+is+related+to+Theresa-Lani...
Theresa Lanier Miller is Thomas Atkinson's wife's 8th great granddaughter

Reverend Theresa Lanier Miller

Any insight to offer in a general way about the Atkinson family?

Looks like John N Burt had widow Mary & 5 children. They should be entered into Geni

From http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/BURT-SOUTHERN-USA/200...

Wills, Etc. 4, 1822-1827, p.521-523 1826 Estate administration records. for John N. BURT

Mary BURT, widow of John (who died intestate, administered the estate. The entries in the 'account current' run from 9 Jan 1811 to 1 Jan 1814. Mary received from the final settlement $734.64, and each of their five children- Philip G., John E., Mary, Thomas A., & William S.- received $293.85 3/5 as their proportion (of total of $2203.92). The account was submitted to the Commissioners Office after audit by Commissioner Jonathan ELLIS, 22 Oct 1825; it was reported to Surry Co. Court 28 Nov 1825, who ordered it recorded 27 Nov 1826.

We are off a generation it seems & need to be looking at a son of John N Burt

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/burt-southern-usa/200...

I have seen other notes about a John Burt Flowers being the son of a John N. Burt. However, it cannot be John Nicholas Burt son of Philip, because he died before 1811. It could have been one of this grandchildren or something - but the following identifies his widow and children .... (see above)

Yeah which is why it is very confusing because it seems there are alot of people with the same names

Although I'm not quite sure how my name came up in this discussion, I do know many of the Atkinson's of North Carolina, including a childhood friend with whom I keep in touch on Face Book. Big family. Just not mine.

Theresa - we're tracking an Atkinson / Burt descent line. And you're an Atkinson from Jamestown. :

Theresa Lanier Miller is Thomas Atkinson's wife's 8th great granddaughter!

Was it a wealthy family around 1800?

I did see that Ralib. It confirms the Burt's were slave holders.

Looks like there are more profiles to enter! And we should also find the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules for Burt in Surry county VA
