Query for all with any knowledge of Volkavisk families:
Please assist: I am really stuck on this problem: My Great grandfather Shimon Samoschianski lived in Wolkowysk and had five sons. His second marriage was Schala Grodensky, who was related to a Rabbi Grodzensky. His son Louis was from his first marriage, and my grandpa four by his second. My Grampa Meyer died in 1968, when I was 14, I didn’t get a chance to interview him, but I did get a chance to interview my great Uncle Rubin Senor in the late 70’s. He had a thick accent but I did get the phonetic sound of the family name before it was changed to Senor. He pronouced in “Zomashevski.” However, one of his brother’s sons spelled it as Tsamosamski. Then to my ASTONISHMENT, this past week I found a Decree of Name Change by another brother, Lester Senor, where the card may be the final correct spelling in Engish: Samoschanski.
Now I am baffled. I kept putting these alternate spellings into the JewishGen soundex, and came up with Zip! I can not find a trace of the name in Wolkowysk Poland, Vilna, Vilnius, Grodno, Yet, ironically, I did find my great grandmother’s maiden name, Grodzensky, and Jewishgen confirmed what I found in a letter from the 1940’s that she may be the niece of Chaim Grodzensky, the rabbi.
