Dear Curator and whomever is reading this. I am sure my problem is not new- but it is new to me and so frustrating that I am about to toss years of work out. In fact- I have spent about 12 hours a day for the past three months on the Gene site- and in one day- everything has ruined. Somehow information and trees have merged onto mine. Those tree branches have 1000's of people! I only want MY tree and things that I input myself on my tree. Now I don't know if it is the mission of this site to 'join the world' together- but I can not manage and handle, nor do I want to- relatives so distant that they are not relatives. For example a great great grandparent's sister's husband's family. If they are not related to me and my husband by blood, I don't want them there! Someone even edited people that I inputted myself- so I just made everything private. I need an administrator, Curator, or angel Geni expert to help me. On my husband's side- we started entering direct ancestors back many generations. Because he is from Holland (we are now in the US)- his family kept meticulous records (easier when living in a small community). Someone (actually three or four someones) have merged their trees onto mine on this Dutch side. Can someone help me? This is not so simple as pressing an X and having someone go away (many of these profiles are managed by someone else). If I go to someone connected whom I manage- and cut off parents for example- then 'my' work is gone. If I want the siblings of those parents gone- there is no way to do it. I hope I am making myself clear. This has been excruciating. Please help so that all of my work and time has not been for nothing. Thank you!
Hello Jill Schilstra, what you describe is what Geni is about. https://www.geni.com/worldfamilytree/learn-more
The website is a shared world family tree where we collaborate together on common ancestors. If you're looking for an isolated tree where you have sole control, Geni is not the website. Geni's parent company MyHeritage specializes in those types of trees. You don't need to manage all the profiles connected to the tree - that would be impossible. Just manage your branch, build on it, add sources, etc. We're all connected and this ties in all those connections.
Here is a better discussion thread to contact curators, but unless the connections are invalid relationships, I don't expect they will disconnect a valid tree as we are tasked with the opposite. The goal and design of Geni is to merge duplicates. https://www.geni.com/discussions/142108
I've found that adjusting my tree view so I'm only working with "the family I know" makes it more comfortable -- the more distant relatives can be someone else's problem:). I generally set for 3-4 generations, and only check in pedigree now & then.
If you think there's an error, post a link & we'll get it fixed.

I had no idea that was the intention of the site. Oh boy. While I appreciate it in theory- I find it overwhelming for what I want it for. Is it possible to print out a copy of the tree I have as it stands now- before it gets larger? I found the option to download the tree in small increments- but I was hoping for something more substantial to share with my family. Thank you all for the responses.
Re: 2) as far as I know - export GED, and then you can upload to wherever you like. http://help.geni.com/entries/466639-How-can-I-export-my-GEDCOM-

Jill i don't quite understand your issues, maybe you can expand.
What many of us do is maintain a backup tree - on computer or another site - and use Geni for what it is: the single best world tree.
It would have been impossible for me to assemble a coherent & accurate family tree without the contributions of those who came before and those working in other parts of the human family.
If I am not interested in my great grandmother's siblings families (although surely she was) - I don't look at them?
Thank you very much. I think that is the perfect solution. To have both a private small family tree and the 'world' tree. I guess it was my own fault for not knowing what I was getting into when I started. Now that I understand, I do appreciate what this site is doing- I just thought that one had to approve of a match and not that it just 'appeared' . One of the issues I have with the merges is inaccurate information and how to fix it. I had two people connect to my ancestor and then there were three of the same families but they were not merged- they were separate. I guess this whole thing is a learning process. Thank you once again for your help.
