John Stevens Guilford, New Haven, born c.1602

I am trying to clear up his parentage. Some have him as son of MP Sir Edward Stephens and Anne Stephens (Crewe) from Gloucestershire. Others claim he's from Kent and a son of Thomas. The evidence against Edward would be the fact he didn't name any of his sons Edward, Edward would have had to be about 19 when John was born and In a school record in England Edwards son John is reported as having died at about 20 years old. Also the spelling changes from Stephens to Stevens. The evidence for Edward seems to be some association to another family in Guilford and the naming of Falcon island (supposedly a homage to the Stephens coat of arms). Also I guess the fact John was a judge could show he was likely well educated, which would be expected for the son of an MP. Anyone know any more about this?
