Em Lo: I am contacting you about this profile: Johanna Jonker. Seeing as we are trying our best to be factually correct about everything, there is perhaps one other point for us all to consider. We do know that Jonker van Makassar had 2 daughters Jamela and Raja, and that when they were baptised it was noted that the eldest was Johanna and the youngest Catharina Jonker. The fact of the matter is we do not know with absolute certainty whether Johanna was Jamela or Raja before, and same for Catharina. Jamela sounds a bit more like Johanna and Raja sounds a bit like the last part of Catharina, but in reality these are suppositions. So should we perhaps not show their previous muslim names as middle names, to be 100% factually correct? Another angle is of course that they were not baptised with middle names, so in reality they CHANGED their names to their Christian names, and that is how they wanted to be known. From that perspective too perhaps we should just stick to their names as they were baptised and known henceforth. How does everyone else feel about this?
The latter argument of course extends to Adolph Jonker too. He too baptised himself as Adolph when he was a teenager. He did not retain his muslim name, so he wanted to be known as just Adolph Jonker and that is how he was known life-long. Again, should we not perhaps drop the Abdullah middle name currently assigned to him too? How does everyone feel about that?
Sharon Doubell: Possibly so. Definitely worth thinking about. I'll wait to hear. I'd presumed they'd been mentioned in respective order of age, in both cases. In the case of Abdullah/Adolf, where we know he was called by both - that is more difficult imo. There is, however, an option to use the language tabs.
Em Lo: I only know of one time that Adolp may have been called Abdul after his baptism, and that was in the 1738 opgaafrol. It is supposition though, because it is the only Jonker entry that appears likely to be him. But it is not clear fact. In our [Familia] article we qualified it "vermoedelik die 20-jarige Adolph" (likely due to the sensus officer having known him previously as such?) Do you guys know of any other occasion that he was called Abdul/lah after his baptism?
